The English Language Curriculum

Have you ever tried to find a link among the English books of the secondary level? Did you find a common methodology among the three grades? Do the skills and objectives of one grade lead to those of the successive grade? Can we consider the curriculum cohesive? Does the curriculum well-prepare our students for the official exam? ...

As for the English language, I find the curriculum very chopped and non coherent. I taught grades 7 and 8 and it seems that each book was prepared by a different committee; there is not thread going through the contenct, the approach and the methodology of both grades. And knowing the skills required in the grade 9 official exams, I don't think that Grade 8 is geared toward the Grade 9 exam. So I have to always to prepare additional material to compensate for this deficiency in the books.

I believe that the place of productive and receptive skills in the current curriculum should be revised. The curriculum structure should be shaped around productive and receptive strands in preference to strands based on text types subdivided into functions and processes.
Although the strands of oral, written and visual language are set out separately in this curriculum, in practice they should be interwoven.
The holistic nature of language learning advocates an integrated approach, incorporating all of the strands rather than teaching each in isolation.

Thank you for your interest Dana. It's intriguing, the way you ask makes it seem as if you are aware...I am an Electrical Engineer working in Dubai, but I studied in Lebanon actually.
Miss Amal Farhat taught me English in grade 7.
How about you Dana, what is your field and what position do you currently occupy?

Yes, Allan was a very good student in Grade 7. I really enjoyed reading your essays Allan. Best of wishes in your domain and in your new life in Dubai. I know you enjoy your work and what you chose to study. I have to admit that your comment shows that you do have a sense of curricula and educational problems.

Allan, i would have never thought that you have a strong background in applied sciences. I find it odd that an engineer has such complex and philosophical views on educational issues (no offense to engineers ye3nee). Nevertheless, I am very imbbpressed!!! Is it possible that you hold and MEP position in Dubai? If so, then maybe it's the "P" in that title that has influenced your diverse interests? what do u think? :)

Well, Miss Banana, I think if you knew Allan pretty well, you would know that he is a unique person and well-capable of holding philosphical views on issues that relate to the human sciences as well as excelling in applied sciences. knowing him, I am not surprized at all at his diverse interests.

It is a great pleasure to write on your blog, Miss Amal. Lebanon's coasts are well known for their fine lemons and bananas; and if I am not mistaken about Miss Banana's identity, I believe she is one of those great persons who can make a difference in this world;East and West. We have the power to shape the civilization that we want. But we need the will, labor, hearts, if we are to build that kind of society by reforming the one we already have. Those of us who are great, came to this world and sought to build more than just a great family. They sought a new society. So I have come here today to your blog to say that you, Miss Amal, can make our visions everyone's reality, and free our souls.
